How to Delegate Effectively As You Build Your Team
Hey there, fellow entrepreneurs!
I recently had the incredible opportunity to join Christy Bowie on the CEO Wingwoman Podcast, where we dived deep into the world of delegation and team-building. If you've ever felt overwhelmed with trying to do it all in your business, trust me, I've been there too. That's why I'm excited to share some of the key insights and strategies from our conversation with you.
Simplifying Complexity: The Art of Delegation
One thing that really resonated with me during our discussion was the importance of simplicity. As business owners, we often tend to overcomplicate things, thinking that more complexity equals better results. However, I beleive that simplicity is key to achieving greater efficiency and productivity in our workflows.
Building Your Dream Team: Aligning Vision and Values
Another valuable takeaway was the significance of building a team that shares your company's vision and values. I emphasised how crucial it is to have a cohesive team that is aligned with your goals and passionate about your mission. After all, when everyone is on the same page, it becomes much easier to drive business growth and create a positive work environment.
Empowering Your Team: Encouraging Creativity and Innovation
One aspect of delegation that really stood out to me was the idea of empowering your team members to make decisions and take ownership of their roles. I talked about how encouraging creativity and innovation within your team can lead to new ideas and approaches that propel your business forward. It's all about giving your team the freedom to think outside the box and contribute their unique perspectives.
Open Communication: The Key to Success
Last but certainly not least, we discussed the importance of open communication in delegation and team-building. I highlighted the value of regular team meetings, transparent feedback loops, and open channels of communication. When everyone feels comfortable sharing their thoughts and ideas, it fosters trust, collaboration, and alignment within the team.
Mastering delegation is a journey, and it's one that requires patience, practice, and a willingness to learn. But trust me when I say that it's worth it. By implementing the strategies and insights shared in the CEO Wingwoman Podcast, you can streamline your operations, maximise productivity, and achieve that elusive work+life harmony we all strive for.

Here are some of the questions I answered during this episode:
"What are specific issues businesses are facing when they come to you needing someone to help me build a team?"
“The transition to building a team, and hiring a team member will be hard. There’s no doubt that bringing on a new person is time-consuming you have to train them etc. But what is the difference between this kind of temporary, yeah, it's going to be hard to bring in a new team member and, oh, no, you don't have it right? How do I tell the difference? if I'm just in this phase of, it's going to be difficult to grow my team or if I just really need a complete overhaul?"
“I know you mentioned that communication is going to be one of the most important things in a world where we're seeing so many more virtual teams. We're literally communicating across the ocean. And when we're seeing different cross-country, cross-state, whatever that looks like, workers, how do you recommend that we have kind of open forms of communication?”
“When we look at building a team, I think one of the hardest things for a lot of people is really defining what the roles of the team members are going to be in a business that is in the growth phase. There are a lot of positions that are, well, you're kind of doing this job, but also a little extra here because I need help here. We're not in an established business with standardised roles. How do you start to look at the kinds of people we need to bring in and what their talents need to be for the tasks we have for them?”
“When we look at these team members that we kind of need in a piecemeal role, what is your take on when we should, what I would consider to be like, outsource, something like hiring maybe a contractor who does have their own business and who's an expert at that versus when we should look at bringing more of an in house employee?”
“In a business that is on the smaller side of staff, the cultural values of the people and kind of personality fit seem to be so much more important to make sure if you have a five-person team and one of those people doesn't get along, that's a bigger deal than at like a 200 person company. So what would you say from a personality whether it's like an Enneagram test or one of the tests, should we be looking for in people to make sure they're going to fit within our company and within the role we have for them?”
“A lot of business owners struggle with or feel overwhelmed with team members. How do we manage them, give them feedback, and have team meetings? How do we be a leader for these team members?”
“Is there anything else you wanted to say to our audience about what they should be thinking about when building their team or delegating in those first roles?”
Here are some insightful quotes and key takeaways from my with Christy Bowie:
“You should be so predictable as a CEO that your team members should be able to know what decision you would make in that instance.“
“Sometimes as business owners, we question ourselves a lot and we've add too many layers. We overcomplicate things so much and sometimes we just need to go with our gut instinct and just reduce it down and just do it the simple way.”
“Are you're getting a return on investment with your team. Are you getting your time back?”
“If your standards are high and your team are performing below the belt, how are they going to get to that better standard if you're not giving feedback that they need?”
“Having team members aligned with your company's vision and values from the beginning is crucial. This ensures everyone is working towards the same goals and fosters a positive company culture.””
"Empowering team members to make decisions aligned with the business's goals and values can lead to greater creativity and innovation within the team.”
“Open communication channels, such as regular team meetings and transparent feedback loops, are essential for building trust and fostering collaboration within a team.”
"It's finding a balance that works for you, but also empowering them to make those decisions so that it doesn't come back and fall on your lap to say, okay, what shall I do now? How do I do this?"
