The Mid-Year Review: Your Key To Success In 2021

At the end of last week, we said goodbye to June, as well as the first half of the year.

This means that right now — the midpoint of the year — is the BEST time to take stock of how well you’ve performed up until now and, more importantly, start identifying what you can do to make the remainder of the year the very best yet!

And while Forbes agrees you should be reviewing your year in full, it’s also important to do a mid-year review to try to recognise areas where you can course-correct, and nudge yourself back on the path to success (if needed!)

So how do you approach reviewing your goals when you’re 6 months through the year?

Read on for my top tips on how to go about it.

When you’re the CEO of your business, unless you have a board of directors to answer to, it’s unlikely you’ll be going through a performance review!

So it’s up to you to ask yourself the important questions about the business’ performance to date.

Set yourself a non-negotiable calendar entry, and ask yourself the following to assess how well the last 6 months have gone:

What went well?

Why did it go well?

What can you learn from that success?

How can you replicate it going forward? (Try to avoid “that was just luck” type answers! What did you, or the company, do that had you in the best position to catch that luck?)

What can you improve?

What goals did you have in the first half of the year that didn’t quite meet expectations when it came to execution?

Are there any tangible actions that you can take, or goals you can set for the rest of the year, which will help to avoid similar situations in the future?

The most important thing here is to reflect on the progress that HAS been made and avoid becoming frustrated at what’s still left to do

With that in mind, are the goals that you set previously still the right goals going forward?

Once you’ve reflected on the year gone by, you should take the time to assess whether your initial goals are still the right fit for the biz - I love this mid-year checklist as a great starting point.

That obviously sounds like a lot of work!

Sure, it’s tough to not only reflect on your goals so far, but to then determine the best next steps for those goals, identify NEW goals, and work out who needs to own achieving them over the next 6 months.

However, once you’ve taken the time to reflect on the answers above, you’ll have a much better idea of what you need to do to take your biz to the next level over the remainder of the year.

And if you’re behind where you thought you would be? That could be a big indicator that something isn’t working.

Maybe you need to implement a new system

Maybe you need to develop a more robust process

Maybe you need to bring in a trusted team member to support you

Whatever the best approach might be, you’ll be heading into the second phase of the year armed with all the information you need.

Over to you

I’d love to hear how your mid-year review went in the comments section below!

All my best,

Selina
