It’s alarming the number of people who have the desire and passion for something and yet confidence stands in the way of them achieving their goals. We’re becoming a society of introverts thanks to everything being available at the click of a button and this means that people feel less and less prepared for social situations that take them out of their comfort zones.

Where and When

Even when dealing with a situation in which you are the most knowledgeable, well-trained or experienced, can often require a great deal of confidence or “nerves of steel.” Unfortunately, confidence is a key ingredient to success in most walks of life be it personal or professional;

  • Confidence to date

  • Confidence to give a presentation

  • Confidence in your ability to raise a family

  • Confidence to invest millions of pounds that are not actually yours

  • For some simply the confidence to get out of bed in the morning.

Where Does It Come From?

It’s tricky, because many people talk about confidence and how it relates to their lives and how they build it up, but very few mention where their confidence comes from. Really, if you think about it, confidence comes from knowing oneself, our accomplishments which help to feed our passion and drive us to achieve our goals as well as creating more confidence within us to help us aim even higher than before.

Of course, there is always a risk of becoming over-confident, so it is important to stay grounded but not let little “blips” hold us back from reaching for what we truly want. But how do we build our confidence?

Building It Up

There is no one set way to build confidence because it comes from within and each person is unique in their own special way. However, we can follow a set of general guidelines in order to build our self-confidence and self-worth;

  • Getting things done – If confidence is derived from accomplishments, we should celebrate each and every win no matter how big or small. For some it may be closing a deal, for others it will be having a child and for a few, it could be getting dressed that day. Whatever it is, get SOMETHING done and celebrate it.

  • Doing the Right Thing – A lot of people attribute confidence to achieving something based on their values and beliefs. By following a moral code of conduct, we get a lot more pleasure and thus confidence from achieving or doing something in the right way rather than through unfair or immoral means.

  • Get Those Endorphins Pumping – Find some kind of exercise you like doing, whether it’s a Zumba class, swimming or a walk with the dog. Increasing your levels of exercise will give you more endorphins which will raise your mood and happiness levels. You’d be surprised how much confidence you can get from happiness.

  • Bravery – There is no quick fix to gaining confidence. It simply comes from building up a belief in yourself, what you know and what you have to say. However, confidence does also require a little bravery. You need to be just a little bit brave to take that first step, say that first word, jump off that high-board. However, the rewards for that moment of bravery are abundant.

“You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.” Eleanor Roosevelt
