Why Do You Do What You Do?
Getting out of bed in the morning can sometimes be the most difficult activity of the day, especially when you are tired. Some might call getting out of bed an ordeal, some might say it’s painful, but no matter what you label the first waking minutes of the day, getting out of bed after a deep sleep is difficult.
However, every new day brings with it a new opportunity to prove yourself, another chance to prove your worth on this planet, to move a step towards your goal, to realise your dreams. So why do we do what we do? What gets us out of bed in the morning?
What do we seek?
On a personal journey through life, we all seek to understand what we don’t, find meaning in all that we know and to gain wisdom and knowledge to help us further along our path.
For most, we travel along the path, distributing our time around work, family, love, fun or anything else that is important to us to find our niche or where we’re meant to “sit” in life.
Changing My Path
For me, I always wanted that high-flying career, working in the city, employed with an income I could be proud of. However, having children changed me. It changed my perspective on life, and it changed my niche seat.
I still wanted a career, I knew that, but I also knew I didn’t want to be the mum that was never there, who went in and kissed her children goodnight after they were asleep and left in the morning before they did. Something had to change. I had to change. My life and path needed a new direction.
So, I moved my path and left the city and set up my own business so I could be there for my children but still have the career I’d always craved. It wasn’t easy, especially in the beginning and trying to maintain the work/life balance this whole change had been about. But why was I doing what I was doing? It was for them. For us. My children. My passion.
The Motivation
Why do you do what you do? For me it’s for passion. My desire and passion to succeed and fill my need for success but also the passion I have for my family and to ensure I am there for them and to watch them grow.
This isn’t always the case, for some the motivation will be survival; if they don’t get up, get out there and go to work, they won’t be able to live. For others it might be purely monetary or based solely on a love of what they do.
To be honest the reason you get out of bed in the morning doesn’t really matter…as long as you have a reason. If I stopped, you in the street and asked you “Why do you do what you do?” Would you be able to give an answer? If not, then perhaps it’s time to look at changing your path, just like I did.
