3 Unexpected Benefits of Delegating
It’s no secret that I champion the art of delegation.
And why wouldn’t I? It’s a skill which allows you to work LESS while still growing your business (as I spoke about just last week.
What’s not to love about that?
However, if that wasn’t enough to convince you that you need to up your delegation game, there are some additional unexpected benefits to delegating that you might not expect.
Let’s take a look!
Increased Employee Engagement
As a business owner, it’s only natural to want a fully-engaged and motivated team on your side.
Not only do you get a great working environment for all concerned, HubSpot also confirmed that a massive 69% of employees said they would work harder if they felt their efforts were recognised.
So how do you ensure your team is feeling engaged in their work?
By delegating to them! (As long as you do it effectively - we’ll come back to that a bit later!)
When you trust your employees with tasks that give them more responsibility or a bigger stake in the day-to-day running of the business, they become more engaged. While routine at work is important to many of us, it can quickly become stagnant. However, when you give a member of your team additional projects or tasks, each day brings new challenges.
Learning & Development Opportunities
Most of us got where we are now through a bit of trial and error. And I hazard a guess that you were able to learn those lessons thanks to being given the opportunity to learn by a past mentor or manager.
Your team is no different.
Sure, your main goals in biz are to keep your clients/customers happy and keep in business.
But while you’re on that journey, there’s room to do so much more.
Perhaps you see great potential in a member of your team. Maybe they could grow to become integral to your business? What if they were primed and ready for the next promotion opportunity you had for them?
By delegating to them now, you’ll know what they’re already capable of and give them the chance to develop the critical skills you’re likely to need from them in the future.
You Get A (Gentle) Reality Check
No matter how long you’ve been in business, you’ve done the grind to get where you are. You’ve developed the ideas, conceptualised and built the business to where it is now.
Your biz is a part of you.
You ARE your business, right?
But you shouldn’t be 🚫
You’re SO much more than that...and if your business wouldn’t survive without you, you’re setting yourself up for a world of trouble further down the road.
When you start delegating, you get a gentle reminder that you’re not the only person capable of doing absolutely everything in your biz.
In fact, I’d suggest that you’re not even the best person to do some of the things in your business.
We all have our strengths and weaknesses. And by delegating to your team (or to an outside source if you don’t have a team) you’re letting someone else come in and use their strengths to benefit your business.
That’s a win all around in my books! 🎊
So let’s come back to the other important thing to remember;
How to EFFECTIVELY delegate
🤩 Explain WHY the task you’re delegating is important to the business so your team member understands the impact of what they’re doing
🤩 Give clear directions of what your expectations are
🤩 Make sure there’s a realistic and clear due date for the work
🤩 Ensure there’s enough time for your team member to complete the task, and support them to clear their schedule where needed
If you follow these, you’ll be well on your way to an engaged, developed team and the lovely realisation that you can afford to take time away from your business (should you want to!)
