Does work/life balance really exist?
“Don’t get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life.” - Dolly Parton
When you’re growing your business at first, many people will tell you that it’s all about the ‘hustle’ and the ‘grind’.
“Put in the hours now, and you’ll reap the rewards later”
Now don’t get me wrong… I don’t necessarily disagree with the concept.
Because when you’re growing your biz at first, you will be putting in a lot of hours to reach your initial goal.
But by the time busy, successful entrepreneurs start to speak to me… they’re so TIRED.
And it’s no wonder!
You’ve been working alone for years, maybe with a little help along the way, but you’re not utilising the help effectively (because you don’t know how OR you feel guilty every time you delegate) and servicing your ever-increasing client base at the same time.
And working these kind of hours leaves no room for everything else in life.
Family
Friends
Loved ones
Holidays
Time to stop, smell the fresh spring air and get some thinking space
Then suddenly everyone’s telling you that you need to get some work/life balance… but is that even possible?
I’m here to say a resounding YES!
I know it is because I managed to get it for myself.
It turns out, taking some time off is actually GOOD for your biz!
I used to work all the hours I could. Even after I left my corporate job to set up Selina & Co., I found my hours getting longer and longer, and my time with my family was being impacted.
Then the dreaded burnout hit…and there’s nothing like your body telling you “no more” to make you stop and listen.
So if work/life balance IS possible, how do you do it?
The key to a great balance between your work and home life is to find what works for you… and then fiercely protect it once you have.
For me, I take every Friday out of the business.
My team all know I’m not around, clients are all aware and it’s hard-booked into my diary. No exceptions.
What I do on this day can change, but often I’ll be out at the park getting a nice leisurely walk or I’ll take myself off for a spa day to properly recharge. Other times I’ll do something special with my girls.
Just having that protected time has been a game-changer for my biz.
When I’m at work, I’m so much more focused because I’m well rested.
And when I’m at home, I can focus on family time and self-care, knowing things in the biz are under control with my team by my side.
For you, it might look like finishing at 3pm every day so you can be there with your kids. Or taking a whole week off every quarter so you can go away somewhere you love.
There are lots of ways to create that work/life balance you’re looking for.
