How To Know WHAT To Delegate?
"Deciding what not to do is as important as deciding what to do" - Jessica Jackley, businesswoman
You know it yourself, and you've been told it countless times... you need to delegate. Because no matter how hard you work, or how many hours you put in...you're becoming the bottleneck in your business.
But knowing you should delegate is only part of the battle. Understanding WHAT you should delegate to others, that's the other side of the coin.
Whenever I consult with clients and help them see how effective delegation will be for their business, I'm faced with the same question:
"What can I possibly pass on to my team or to other people that can't be done by me?"
And even more clients think they're the only people who can do every single important task in their business.
Just like this article, I agree that delegating effectively is difficult but necessary for the growth of your biz.
So with that said - here's how you can quickly figure out exactly what you should be delegating to others.
Track your time
The first step in figuring out what you should delegate is to look at exactly what you're doing.
You might be currently tracking billable time for clients, but the trick here is to start tracking everything.
Categorise all your tasks into the following:
Admin
Copywriting
Social Media
Writing
Designing
Scheduling
Engagement
New business acquisition
Retention
Training & business development
...and any other tasks that might be relevant for your biz
Not only is this a great way to boost your time management skills, it's also going to form the template to decide what to pass over to others.
Do this for a week or two, and then set aside some time to assess your time.
Are you spending a lot of time scheduling social media posts? Consider giving this to a team member.
Wasting hours agonising over copywriting? Would that time be better spent on other things, making it worthwhile to hire a copywriter?
And if you're not sure which of these tasks someone else could do for you, you might find some gems in this blog article.
In an ideal world, the only tasks you should be left doing are the ones which are absolutely critical to you (i.e. high-level client work, business development and training).
Give time tracking a go over the next couple of weeks and let me know in the comments below which tasks you can give to someone else.
All my best,
Selina
