My 5-Step System For Creating An Elite Team
When I looked to scale my business, I knew I’d need to put some serious processes in place if I was going to be able to maintain the high standards I’d worked so hard to become known for with my clients.
I won’t lie to you — it felt like a big leap!
Letting someone in can be scary when your business is your baby but it can be one of the first and most important steps towards growth.
Take a look at the top 5 things I did to keep quality sky-high and take my biz to the next level.
I added an application form to my website
At Selina & Co., the doors are always open to talented freelancers who would be an asset to the team — but it’s not easy to be selected. I’m looking for the best of the best, so to save time, I added an application form to my website to make sure they’re hitting the essential criteria right off the bat.
New team members must:
Be available 4 days per week
Be based in the UK
Have at least 5-years’ experience in their area of expertise
Be in it for the long haul!
2. I hired an expert
I’m super excited to be working with an expert HR professional (formerly working at Marks and Spencer!) to help me select the best of the best for my team. She has the first call with all of my applicants to check they meet the requirements and to get a feel for their personalities before feeding her recommendations back to me. I trust her judgment 100%!
3. I take personality into account
Before putting my team in front of clients, I need to be sure they’re a good fit. Throughout the hiring process, all calls and interviews take place on Zoom so I can see their body language. We also carry out personality tests for every member of the team so we can profile them exactly for our clients and produce the best work possible.
4. New team members complete trial tasks
It goes without saying that our team members need to be able to do what they say they can do! As a business owner myself, I understand how it feels to part with your hard-earned cash on support — and how hard it can be when they don’t live up to your expectations.
At Selina & Co., new team members need to complete at least 3 trial tasks for my business to demonstrate the quality of their work before they become client-facing.
5. I act as the main account manager
I made a conscious decision early on to stay as a permanent fixture in all of the client relationships at Selina & Co. Of course, it would be more time efficient to be hands off — but I feel like it’s a super important layer of support for clients (if they have any questions or concerns) and my team (to continually give them guidance and advice). It helps us to make sure we’re giving the BEST standard of service at all times.
