Two Signs You’re Not Effectively Delegating (And How To Solve It)
If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ll know I’m an expert at helping entrepreneurs delegate effectively to take their biz from strength to strength.
Some of my clients have never tried to delegate before, so we’re starting from scratch with the techniques, processes and structures to help them delegate to elevate.
However, sometimes I come across a client who tells me they are delegating already…but they’re still not seeing the results they were expecting.
There are some common mistakes that entrepreneurs make when they delegate.
But first you have to be able to identify that something’s going wrong.
Here are the top three signs you’re not effectively delegating - and my tips on how to solve it!
1 - You’re the bottleneck and you control everything
When you started out in biz, the chances are you were a one-person band and you wore all the hats. As your business grew, you had to expand your team to cope with the demands on your time.
However, when you’re so used to doing everything it can be hard to let go of the reins.
One of the most common things I hear from my clients is the protest that the lion’s share of work can ONLY be done by them.
And if you’re saying the same thing right now, I’d like you to challenge that belief.
Over the course of one or two weeks, list out every task you end up doing. When you review that list at the end, be really honest with yourself; were you really the only person who could have done that task?
If you’re unsure of the kinds of tasks you could delegate to a team member, this guide will help you out!
You might need to offer some training to a team member, put new processes in place or work on your own mindset, but being able to drop more of your tasks will stop you becoming the bottleneck in your own business.
Your clients get a better experience, your team will feel more empowered and you’ll have more time to do the things you LOVE doing. It’s a win/win!
2 - You’re doing way too much and still picking up the pieces
How often do you let your team problem-solve for you?
Whether it’s a client problem, a supplier issue or scheduling has gone wrong, there are times when things go wrong and a problem needs to be corrected.
I hear a lot of my clients say they spend a lot of time picking up the pieces. So much time, in fact, that they just don’t want to delegate anything anymore.
I know it can be disheartening when things don’t go to plan but it’s all part of the learning process.
When you first started in business, how many mistakes did you learn from before you got the processes right?
These mistakes probably made you a better entrepreneur.
And if your team makes mistakes, letting them problem-solve will make them better at working for you, too.
Instead of acting on impulse and stepping in to fix everything, be there to lend a supportive hand alongside some guidance and only take control if things aren’t improving.
Over time, you’ll end up with a team who you can trust to do the right thing by your clients and your business, and you’ll feel more confident letting them run the day-to-day operations.
